In North Carolina, I often had trouble spotting my vehicle, “The Egg,” as is fondly known as, in a parking lot filled with other white Ford Tauruses like it. In Denver, however, I have not once encountered such a problem.
Yes, The Egg has given me a few challenges to overcome here (number one being it apparently dislikes cold weather and number two being that it does not have four-wheel drive), but blending into the crowd has not been one of them. If I had a Subaru, though, it would be another story. You can’t drive down a street in Denver, nor any other city in Colorado, for that matter, without passing an Outback or another model from Colorado’s most favorite auto manufacturer.
When that sad yet inevitable time comes to put The Egg out to pasture, I will definitely consider purchasing a Scooby myself, and not just because it will make me more Denverish. Subarus are among the safest vehicles on the road today, every single one of them has four-wheel drive, perfect for tackling snowy conditions and winding mountain passes. They are also a great value. At less than $25,000 MRSP, it is not unusual for a Scooby to still be kicking at 200,000+ miles.
The one thing about Subaru that I am a bit baffled by is the fact that they don’t yet have a hybrid vehicle on the road. This is strange to me, considering the manufacturer’s reputation for being environmentally responsible and supporting related causes. There has been a hybrid prototype for some years now, but not concrete plans for unveiling a one to go to market have yet been released.
There is one more reason why I am letting Subaru woo me. According to the manufacturer’s Web site, SUBARU” is a Japanese word that means “unite.” It is also a term that identifies the cluster of six stars that the Greeks called the Pleiades. The Pleiades are part of the Taurus constellation. Hm, I wonder what other cars are part of the Taurus constellation. Perhaps I should consult the starts from now on when selecting an automobile. Christy Correll founded Denverish shortly after ridding herself of most of her possessions, quitting her job, & moving halfway across the country to live in the capital city of Colorado. Texan by birth, Christy is no stranger to the Wild West. However, Colorado has a very strong sense of place that distinguishes it from other Western states. Join Christy and her sheltie, Scout, in exploring their new home. Along the way you will encounter many wonderful things — and a few peculiarities — that cannot be found anywhere else on earth.
